Alstonefield Camping Barn with cosy woodburning stove

Alstonefield Camping Barn is in a prime position in the Peak District.  It commands breath-taking views in all directions.  The perfect retreat to get back to nature and get away from it all, with birdwatching by day and star gazing by night!  There are dale walks from the door and for those with boundless energy there are numerous hills to climb to be rewarded with panoramic views of the Derbyshire countryside in all its glory. It provides basic communal accommodation for 1 to 12 persons on a sole use basis.

Our barn is ideal for all sorts of campers:  Families and Friends, walking, climbing and cycling groups (Manifold Cycle Trail is just down the road), Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh and School Groups.  Its been used as a basic venue for corporate bookings for team building and many university students have used it as a venue for film making.  It is also a popular choice for just a couple wanting to switch off from the hassles of a hectic life.  The barn has no electricity but we believe that this adds to its charm.  Once candle lit it is quite magical and has great atmosphere.  Its like camping but you don’t get wet!

The ground floor comprises:-

  • Entrance lobby with coat hooks and plenty of room for storing boots, rucksacks, etc.
  • Cooking, eating and living area with two large picnic tables
  • Kitchen units, sink and cooking bench

  • Wash room with flush toilet and hand wash basin, sorry no hot water or shower
  • A cold water tap at the front of the barn for washing dirty boots

The first floor is very traditional retaining:-

  • Original exposed stone work
  • Magnificent internal wooden beams

  • This large empty communal bedroom enjoys wonderful views from both windows

What you will need to bring:-

  • Your usual camping equipment
  • A good sleeping bag (weight according to season)
  • A foam mat (blow up air bed) - as mattresses are not provided
  • Warm clothes, walking boots or stout shoes.
  • One torch per person, as there is no electricity at the barn
  • Flat safety night/tea light candles. For safety reasons, it is not advisable to use ordinary candles. Candle holders and an initial supply of tea lights are provided.
  • Camping Stove for cooking and fuel
  • Cooking utensils, saucepans, plates, cutlery etc
  • Dry seasoned logs or smokeless fuel for the multi-fuel stove - please enquire about what is required when booking.

Please be aware that our barn is not a suitable venue for loud celebrations parties and hen and stag parties.

Our remote barn stands in its own little meadow off the beaten track but is within walking distance of quaint village pubs serving good food and the Manifold Hotel at Hulme End which often serves Campers Breakfasts.

The village of Hartington with its own cheese shop, cafes, pubs etc is only 4 miles away. The barn is close to Manifold and Tissington off road trails for cyclists, Ramshaw Rocks for climbers and for those who enjoy water sports it is 20 minutes drive from Carsington Water Visitor Centre . The famous theme park at The Alton Towers Resort, the country's most popular attraction, is less than half an hours drive away, as is Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath, better suited to smaller children. Click on Attractions and start planning!

Two well behaved dogs are welcome (under strict control at all times as the meadow next to the barn often has sheep or cattle grazing) and only following prior arrangement with ourselves and under no circumstances should be left alone in the barn.
